[ITASCA, IL] – The Itasca Park District and Village of Itasca are delighted to announce the receipt of a $600,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant from the State of Illinois. This funding represents a significant step toward a $1.2 million transformative project at the beloved Springbrook Nature Center.
Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) awarded over $55 million in OSLAD grants this year to 100 communities across Illinois, investing in parks and recreational spaces to strengthen communities and create more opportunities for residents to connect with nature.
“This grant is a wonderful gift to the residents of Itasca and a testament to the importance of preserving and enhancing our green spaces. The improvements planned for Springbrook Nature Center will enrich our community for generations, providing spaces for learning, leisure, and togetherness.” Said Maryfran Leno, Executive Director of the Itasca Park District.
The planned upgrades will transform Springbrook Nature Center into a premier destination. Key enhancements include a large-scale, multi-use structure for picnicking, educational programming, and special events, along with a glycol ice rink for year-round enjoyment and a welcoming gathering plaza. Additional improvements include the restoration of the outdoor classroom, upgrades to the aviary and habitat development, wetland restoration to support biodiversity, and interpretive signage to engage and educate visitors. These features align with the shared Master Plans of the Village of Itasca and the Itasca Park District, creating spaces that seamlessly blend nature, education, and recreation to better serve the community.
The Itasca Park District and Village of Itasca invite residents to stay tuned for updates on the progress of this exciting project, which will serve as a shining example of what is possible when communities prioritize investment in outdoor spaces.
